In a random sweep, the Nazis arrest and imprison Jean Louis Chavel, a rich lawyer in German-occupied France. They pass an edict to execute every tenth prisoner and Chavel is chosen. He gives all he owns to Mangeot, who then dies in his place. Chavel is released three years later, returns to his old home and meets Mangeot's family
